Five Minute Mystery - Old Time Radio

Five Minute Mystery

Five Minute Mystery was a late 1940's crash course in how to be a sleuth. The brief -scripts were well-written, fast-paced, and engaging.

Listeners got in on the action with this syndicated show. They were invited to solve the mystery while the last commercial aired. Organ music played between segments to give radio stations time to insert local commercials.

First, the announcer would lay out the circumstances of the crime -- diamond theft, murder in various locales, robbery, shootings, or poisoning, and more. Then, an exchange between the detective on the case and the suspects would be dramatized. At the end of the show, they would explain which clues during the scenario led to solving the case, and making appropriate arrests. Listeners would then know if they were as savvy as the professional lawmen.
